Project Pierport
Although published here under "Mission Accomplished", Project Pierport is an ongoing survey project from two enthusiastic young ISE Divers. Keep coming back for updates and pictures.
About the managers of the project
Tim is a 16 years old diver who is BoE certified. He dives for 4 years and has about 80 dives.
He got his first diving license in 2011 from the German organization VDST. The DIR System was used since 2012 because all the skills and equipment is more thought out. In 2013 he switched to ISE because he wanted to get better trained.
It´s very important for him, that the people respect the nature.
That is one of the reasons, why he started this new project to collect meaningful data.
His next goal is to complete the ISE cave diving course on Mallorca. He also takes part at the ISE Viking project 2.
The second part of the team is Jannik, he is a 16 year old Cmas** diver and wants to make the BoE in summer 2014. Together with Tim he made his first Cmas diving license in 2011. Till now he has round about 80 dives. He likes the sea, especial the Baltic Sea. Together with his family he has 3 sailing boats at the Baltic sea. These boats are his "second home". He also took part 4 times at the German junior science competition "Jugend forscht" and got two times the first place at the regional contest south in Schleswig-Holstein. 2014 he received the "Queisser Junioren Preis" for social engagement. He also likes photography and filming over- and underwater.
The beginning…
2013 we made some fun dives in the Baltic Sea from the beach. During different dives we noticed, that the fish population and the vegetation growth had decreased. 2014 we decided to observe the influences of shipping. The location is Damp, which is located in Germany. The maximum depth is just 3-4 meters. We decided to dive every 4 weeks to collect the following data:
- Visibility with a scechi plate
- Temperature (It will be measured with a dive computer)
- Growing of the vegetation. We placed a stone underwater to survey the vegetation growth on it
- Ph value (On every dive we will take water samples to examine it.)
- Weather
- Abudance of species (We made a 4x4 meter raster so we have got 4 1x1 meter fields which we can survey)
Dive Logbook
First dive
Data: Max. Depth: 3meters, Time 50 min., Visibility: 2m.
10 days before the dive, we build a scechi plate and a drytube for the stainless steel poles.
The first dive was organized to build the raster, installing the scechi plate and installing the reef.
Tim dived with Double 12 tanks and Jannik dived with a Mono 10 tank.
We had to dive about 30 meters with the dry tube and the stone on a lift bag. In a depth of 2 meters we decided to build the raster.
We opened the dry tube and punched the 6 one meter long poles in the sandy ground. After that, we made a raster with the caveline. This part took about a half hour.
We secured the knots from the caveline with small cable ties onto the poles. That was the trickiest part, because we had thick neoprene gloves and the cable ties were a little bit too small…
After that, we installed the scechi plate on one pole and attached a knotted line to it.
Now we swam backwards away from the scechi plate and after the second knot (2meters) we didn´t see the plate anymore.
Now we took the stone with the lift bag and connected the stone with a line to the raster so you can find him even without any visibility.
At the end, we controlled all the knots and poles. Than we attached the lift bag to the hammer, made it neutrally buoyant and swam back to the entrance.
Second dive (26-06-2014)
The dive began with a freeflowing second stage. After adjusting the ventury switch, the problem was solved.
Unfortunately our last raster from the last dive was destroyed from a big fishing net.
So, we had to make a complete new raster. This task took about 45minutes.
After that, we documented our data, wich you can see in the following table.
We also made some photos.
